Is My Fish Oil Rancid? How to Tell & Choose a Quality Omega-3

Not all fish oil deserves a place in your supplement cabinet. Some products are fresh and rigorously tested. Others may already be oxidized before you open the bottle. With a background in pharmacy and dietary supplements, Ana Aleksic, MSc Pharm, examines what separates high-quality fish oil from the rest, speaking with supplement quality expert Jordan Glenn of SuppCo about oxidation, testing standards, and what consumers should know before choosing an omega-3 supplement.

Fish Oil vs. Omega-3s: What's the Difference?

Fish oil is one of the most extensively studied supplements, with research exploring its benefits for heart, brain, and anti-inflammatory support. It's also one of the easiest to get wrong.

Fish oil and omega-3s are often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. Omega-3s are a family of essential polyunsaturated fats, while fish oil is one source of those fats. Specifically, fish oil provides the long-chain omega-3s EPA and DHA, the forms most readily used by the body. Plant foods contain a different omega-3 called ALA, but only a tiny amount is converted into EPA and DHA, making it a less reliable source (Lane et al., 2014). 

Despite the name, fish aren't the original producers of these fats. They accumulate EPA and DHA by eating marine algae and other small organisms. This is why algae oil has become a popular vegetarian alternative, providing the same long-chain omega-3s found in fish oil.

Why Fish Oil Quality Matters

Because omega-3 fats are highly prone to oxidation, fish oil can go rancid long before it reaches your supplement cabinet. As a result, some over-the-counter products may not deliver the same quality or benefits as the fish oil used in clinical research. That has fueled ongoing debate over whether fish oil supplements are even worth taking.

But, that's asking the wrong question.

The real question we should be asking is: What makes a fish oil supplement high quality?

Many Fish Oil Supplements Fail Quality Standards

Several studies have tested fish oil supplements in different parts of the world, and their results point to a major quality concern:

  • In Canada, 50% of 171 omega-3 supplements from 49 brands available over the counter in retail stores exceeded voluntary limits for at least one oxidation marker (Jackowski et al., 2015)
  • In the USA, 27% of products tested had more than twice the recommended lipid peroxide levels (Cameron-Smith et al., 2015)
  • In South Africa and New Zealand, more than 80% of supplements tested exceeded recommended oxidation levels (Opperman & Benade, 2013; Albert et al., 2015)

What to Look for in a High-Quality Fish Oil Supplement

To better understand what quality really means in the supplement industry, Ana Aleksic, MSc Pharm spoke with Jordan Glenn, PhD, an expert in supplement quality and testing. 

Jordan Glenn is a unique voice in the supplement industry. As Head of Science at SuppCo, he oversees independent testing initiatives and the company’s proprietary TrustScore system. Jordan has also authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and is a strong advocate for supplements as a tool for health optimization beyond one-size-fits-all approaches.

To kick off the conversation, Ana asked Jordan what the three most important things are that consumers should look for when choosing a fish oil or omega-3 supplement.

“I'd tell people to look for three things: third-party testing (for both purity and oxidation), the actual EPA/DHA content per serving (not just "1000mg fish oil," which can often be filler), and the form the omega-3s are in,” Jordan explained.

If you have a bottle of fish oil sitting in your supplement cabinet, it may be a good idea to look for these three things on the label as a start. Whether you're wondering if it's time to toss that bottle or you're shopping for an omega-3 supplement and want to make the right choice, a little detective work can go a long way.

“As a personal note, if a brand is transparent about all three of those, that's usually a pretty good signal they're not cutting corners elsewhere either,” Jordan added. “I generally recommend anything above an 8.0 trust score on SuppCo as a good nod as well. A lot of times, it can be hard for consumers to find all this information on their own, and that is a good way to gauge that a product is of high quality (because SuppCo already did the work for them).”

What to look for in a quality fish oil supplement

1. Third-Party Testing

Oxidation Testing

Because fish oil is highly vulnerable to oxidation, oxidation testing is one of the best ways to determine freshness. GOED is the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s, and it sets voluntary monograph limits to ensure product safety and efficacy. These three measurements are the industry standard:

  • Peroxide Value (PV): Detects early-stage oxidation. GOED recommends ≤5 mEq/kg.
  • Anisidine Value (p-AV): Measures secondary oxidation compounds that form over time as oils degrade. GOED recommends ≤20.
  • TOTOX (Total Oxidation Value): Combines both measurements to provide an overall picture of oxidation (TOTOX = (2 × PV) + p-AV). GOED recommends ≤26, but many premium fish oils aim for much lower levels. Generally, a TOTOX below 10–15 indicates excellent freshness, while values above 26 suggest significant oxidation.

Purity Testing

Since oxidation can affect taste, stability, and the quality of omega-3 fatty acids, third-party testing is important. Fish and marine oils may also contain environmental contaminants such as heavy metals, PCBs, and dioxins. Reputable manufacturers use purification processes to remove these compounds, and high-quality fish oil supplements typically contain only trace or undetectable levels of these contaminants.

To verify safety and quality, look for products that provide third-party testing and a Certificate of Analysis (COA) showing results for contaminants, including heavy metals and other impurities. Independent certifications, such as IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) or compliance with recognized quality standards, can provide additional assurance.

Low-quality brands of fish oil may also contain fillers and other additives. Allergens may also be present in some products. Be sure to check the full ingredient list. 

One way to check your fish oil is to find the exact product name and lot number on your bottle, visit the manufacturer’s website and look for a COA or third-party testing report, and confirm that PV, p-AV, or TOTOX values are provided for that specific batch.

This is why transparency matters. A brand that openly shares testing results for its products gives consumers more confidence that they are getting a clean, accurately labeled, and high-quality omega-3 supplement.

What Certifications Matter? 

Since this can seem complex, Ana asked Jordan what types of quality testing, certifications, or manufacturing standards he considers most meaningful for fish oil supplements. He brought up three:

1. GMP-certified manufacturing

2. Third-party certifications like NSF, USP, and TESTED by SuppCo

3. The "best by" or expiration date relative to when you're actually buying it, since a bottle that's been sitting on a shelf (or in your cabinet) for a year is a very different product than one fresh off the line.

“The last one can be tricky, though, because we don't always know what's happening in the process before a bottle hits a shelf,” Jordan highlights. 

He explains that they also have a TESTED by SuppCo certification where they run a “secret shopper” model. This works by buying products off shelves as they are, regardless of how long they've been sitting there, and checking that the active ingredients are still intact. “Between outside certification and unannounced spot-checking, it is a combination I actively trust as a consumer,” he says. 

2. EPA/DHA Content 

A supplement claiming to contain 1,000 mg of fish oil may sound impressive, but that number alone doesn’t tell you much. Most of it could be fats from the fish that don’t provide specific health benefits. The important details are the amounts of EPA and DHA, the two active omega-3 fatty acids.

Fish oil supplements are often standardized to provide a combined EPA and DHA dose. For example, a typical formulation may provide around 600 mg of combined EPA and DHA, with approximately 55% EPA and 37% DHA, although the exact ratio varies between products.

A capsule containing 1000 mg of fish oil might contain around 300 mg of combined EPA and DHA. Concentrated formulas may provide 500 mg EPA and DHA per capsule. Always check the “Supplement Facts” label to see how much EPA and DHA you are actually getting, rather than relying on the total fish oil amount. 

3. Omega-3 Form 

When you shop for a fish oil supplement, here are the forms of omega-3s you’ll encounter:

  • Triglycerides (TG): found in natural fish oil (unconcentrated or lightly processed) and most algal oils
  • Re-esterified triglycerides (rTG): found in premium processed fish oils
  • Ethyl-esters (EE): found in processed fish oil (concentrated by distilling with ethanol): 
  • Phospholipids (PL): found in krill oil and some advanced algal oils

You can identify the omega-3 form by checking the "Supplement Facts" panel or ingredient list on the back of the bottle. Manufacturers usually state the molecular form right next to the source name (such as fish oil or krill oil).

 

“Triglyceride or phospholipid forms absorb better than the cheaper ethyl ester form,” Jordan highlights.

 

Research backs this up, showing that re-esterified triglyceride, triglyceride, and phospholipid forms of omega-3s are generally more bioavailable than ethyl esters (Abdelhafez et al., 2025; Dyerberg et al., 2010).

However, when it comes to oxidation and shelf-stability, manufacturing quality seems to matter more than omega-3 form.

“Some research suggests ethyl esters oxidize slightly faster than triglycerides due to the missing glycerol backbone, but that's minor compared to things like added antioxidants, oxygen exposure during processing, and storage conditions,” he goes on to explain. 

He says he’d pick a form based on absorption, not oxidative stability, then judge shelf life by how the product was actually made and tested. And that regardless, the triglyceride form is more bioavailable and recommended over the ethyl ester form. “Even if there is a shelf-stable issue, the triglycerides are the winner regardless,” he concludes. 

Additional Quality Cues

Fish oil sourcing raises important environmental considerations, including pressure on marine ecosystems, fishing practices, and the carbon footprint of commercial fisheries. However, the environmental impact can vary widely depending on the source and production methods.

When choosing a fish oil supplement, look for brands that provide transparency around sourcing and use recognized sustainability certifications, such as Friend of the Sea (FOS) or Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. These certifications can help verify responsible sourcing practices and traceability.

How To Tell If Your Fish Oil Has Gone Rancid At Home

Are there any signs of rancidity you can reliably detect at home, and are there cases where this isn't obvious?

“Smell and taste are your best home tests,” Jordan explains. “Fresh fish oil should be neutral to mildly fishy (at most), and a sharp, paint-like smell or if you open the bottle and something just smells ‘off’ likely means it's oxidized.”

At-Home Rancidity Checklist

Before you toss your bottle, run through these questions:

  • Does it smell, taste, or feel off? A strong fishy, sour, or paint-like smell or taste is often the first sign that your fish oil has oxidized.
  • How old is it? The longer fish oil sits on your shelf or in your refrigerator, the greater the chance of oxidation, especially after opening. Liquid fish oil is the most vulnerable, while capsules, blister packs, and chewables generally offer better protection (Yenipazar & Şahin‐Yeşilçubuk, 2022)
  • How has it been stored? Heat, light, and air all speed up oxidation. Fish oil should be stored in a cool, dark place, and some liquid products are best kept refrigerated after opening.
  • Is it packaged in amber or opaque glass? Dark glass helps block UV light, reducing oxidation by roughly 70% compared with clear packaging (Igielska-Kalwat et al., 2026)
  • Is it flavored? Flavoring can mask the smell and taste of oxidation, making rancid fish oil harder to detect. The flavoring itself may also contribute to oxidation, often making unflavored products the safer choice (Hands et al., 2023).
  • Was it nitrogen flushed? Replacing oxygen with nitrogen before sealing the container can improve omega-3 stability by approximately 30–50%, helping protect the oil during storage (DeWitt et al., 2016). 

Is At-Home Assessment Enough to Know If Fish Oil Is Rancid?

While you may notice a strong fishy, sour, or paint-like smell or taste to your fish oil, oxidation is not always detectable at home. The most reliable way to assess freshness is to check third-party testing results for oxidation markers such as peroxide value (PV), anisidine value (p-AV), and TOTOX.

Jordan adds that oxidation can start well before you’d notice anything. The compounds that create rancid smell and taste often form only after a lot of the beneficial fatty acids have already degraded, meaning a fish oil can show signs of oxidation before a consumer notices anything unusual. 

“This is impossible to tell as a general consumer at home, so that's why we recommend third-party oxidation testing rather than asking people to trust their nose alone,” Jordan concludes. 

What Exactly Happens When Fish Oil Goes Rancid?

Fish oil is among the most oxidation-prone supplements out there. Due to its high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, fish oil easily oxidizes when exposed to heat, light, and air. Internal factors, including fatty acid composition, antioxidant content, and the presence of water and heavy metals, also influence how quickly oxidation occurs (Cameron-Smith et al., 2015).

Yet oxidation isn't black and white. There are many shades of gray between fresh and rancid.

Is Rancid Fish Oil Harmful?

A fish oil may be only mildly oxidized, hovering close to or just above the recommended limits. While it may not represent the highest quality, it's unlikely to be truly rancid or to cause adverse health effects (Phung et al., 2020). And it might not taste or smell off. However, it may not deliver the full range of potential benefits seen with fresher, higher-quality oils. That’s why you can’t rely on how a fish oil seems to you but need to check what quality tests the company is doing. 

On the other end of the spectrum, fish oil that’s severely oxidized is rancid. Its potency, bioavailability, and potential anti-inflammatory benefits may be reduced, while the risk for digestive side effects will go up. This oil will surpass quality limits, and severely oxidized oils have been shown to have adverse effects in animal studies at high doses (Phung et al., 2020). 

The biggest unanswered question is what moderate oxidation means for human health. While severely oxidized fish oils are clearly undesirable, researchers are still trying to determine whether moderately oxidized oils pose a real concern. At the same time, the industry is working to understand how common these products are on store shelves.

What we do know is that fresher, higher-quality oils better preserve the beneficial compounds we’re looking for in omega-3 supplements and contain fewer oxidation products and impurities.

Fish Oil Oxidation: Real Risk or Not?

Is fish oil oxidation a widespread issue you should worry about, or is the risk sometimes overstated?

“It's definitely an issue; studies testing fish oil off the shelf regularly find a meaningful chunk of products already oxidized beyond recommended limits,” Jordan points out.

Jordan also explains that "oxidized" doesn't mean “dangerous” overnight; it mostly means you're getting less of the omega-3 benefit and a worse-tasting product, not something acutely harmful. “So it's more of a quality issue than a scare. I recommend picking a brand that actively tests for it rather than worrying about the one you already have,” he says. 

Shopping Checklist for a Quality Fish Oil

When choosing a fish oil supplement, look beyond the front-of-label claims. The best products are transparent about quality, freshness, and omega-3 content.

You can use this checklist as a guide when shopping for a fish oil supplement:

Check for oxidation testing: Look for brands that provide Certificates of Analysis (COAs) with oxidation markers such as TOTOX, peroxide value (PV), and anisidine value (p-AV).

Look for third-party testing: Independent testing can help verify purity, potency, contaminant levels, and accurate EPA/DHA labeling.

Focus on EPA + DHA content: The total amount of fish oil does not tell you how much active omega-3 you are getting. Focus on EPA + DHA content over total oil.

Favor triglyceride and phospholipid omega-3s: these win absorption over ethyl-ester forms typically found in cheaper fish oils.

Choose protective packaging: Dark bottles, opaque containers, or blister packs can help reduce exposure to light and oxygen.

Consider nitrogen flushed products: Products that replace oxygen with nitrogen before sealing have improved stability during storage.

Be cautious with flavored oils: Flavoring can mask unpleasant tastes and odors that may signal oxidation.

Consider sourcing and sustainability: Look for brands that provide transparency about where their fish oil comes from and how it is sourced.

Store it properly: Keep fish oil away from heat and light. Follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions, and use liquid oils within the recommended timeframe after opening (typically 60–90 days). Refrigeration after opening may help preserve freshness.

“Look at the testing behind the product, not simply the marketing on the front of the bottle,” Jordan wraps up.

The best fish oil supplement is not necessarily the one with the highest dose. It is the one that provides an appropriate amount of EPA and DHA in a fresh, well-tested, high-quality product.

Does Fish Oil Brand Matter?

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about fish oil quality is assuming that price or a trusted brand name automatically means quality. 

“In reality, oxidation and purity issues show up across price points, because those things depend on manufacturing and testing practices that aren't necessarily visible on the label,” Jordan explains. “The only way to actually know is to look at the testing behind a product, not what you're paying for it or how familiar the name is.”

Flavored vs Unflavored: Does it Matter?

Flavored fish oils are often marketed as tasting better, particularly in products for children. However, a 2023 analysis of 72 omega-3 supplements found that 68% of flavored and only 13% unflavored products exceeded TOTOX upper limits (Hands et al., 2023).

Can flavoring mask signs of oxidation, and should you not assume that a pleasant taste means a product is fresh?

“On top of the research suggesting flavored fish oils may actually degrade faster than unflavored ones, flavoring naturally masks the smell or taste that would otherwise tip you off to oxidation,” Jordan says. “That doesn't mean flavored products are bad, but it's a watch point worth being aware of, especially for kids' products. It's an area the science is still catching up on, and we're learning more about it as more research comes out.”

Which Omega-3 Supplements Are Not Rancid?

While you may think it would be great to have a list of supplements that “aren’t rancid,” making such a list would not be reliable. It’s more important to think about what quality manufacturers have in common and how to find them. 

“The best manufacturers tend to share those same traits: rigorous testing, transparency, and attention to detail,” he summarizes. 

Instead of recommending specific brands, Jordan points people to something like SuppCo’s Trust Score instead. He explains that anything above an 8.0 is a solid signal, since that number is already accounting for the manufacturing process, certifications, oxidation and purity testing, and even the inactive ingredients. 

FAQs

Is it really necessary to take fish oil?

Since your body can only make small amounts of omega-3s from ALA, your omega-3 body stores depend on your diet. 

Most healthy people can get enough omega-3s by eating fish twice a week.

If you don’t consume fish and seafood often, your omega-3 dietary intake is likely low. In that case, select fish oil or omega-3 supplements may be a good way to increase your omega-3 stores. 

The amount of fish oil or omega-3s you may benefit from depends on your health status. Whether or not it will be beneficial for you also depends on the form and dosage. There’s no real benefit to taking a generic fish oil supplement for “general health” without examining your diet, health status, wellness goals, and supplement quality. You really need to get specific. 

How much omega-3 should I take per day?

For general wellness, most guidelines recommend 250–500 mg of combined EPA and DHA per day. People with high triglycerides may need a higher dosage, sometimes at up to 4 grams per day. This requires a prescription product, recommended and monitored by a healthcare provider. 

While omega-3 supplements are considered safe for healthy adults at doses up to 5 grams daily, more is not always better. 

Recent research suggests that higher-dose omega-3 supplementation, particularly above 1 gram per day, may be associated with a modest increase in the risk of atrial fibrillation in some individuals. Higher doses should be discussed with a healthcare provider, especially for people with cardiovascular risk factors. Certain groups, including people engaging in high-intensity endurance exercise or those with untreated sleep apnea, may also be more susceptible (O'Keefe et al., 2025). 

Ultimately, it’s better to take a lower-dose, high-quality, bioavailable fish oil or omega-3 supplement than a high-dose, low-quality one.

Can I still take rancid fish oil?

If you’ve been taking fish oil that tastes rancid, there’s no need to panic. Taking a rancid fish oil supplement for a short period of time at typical doses is unlikely to cause harm. However, if you’ve determined that your fish oil is truly rancid, it’s best to stop taking it and replace it with a fresh, high-quality supplement.


If you just opened a new bottle and noticed an off smell or taste, contact the retailer or manufacturer. A product that appears rancid when first opened may have been exposed to conditions that accelerated oxidation, and you may be eligible for a replacement or refund.

Is fish oil no longer recommended?

The answer depends on the type of fish oil and why it is being used.

The 2026 joint guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association recommend against nonprescription fish oils citing that these products have not demonstrated clinical benefit in patients with high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia) or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). They also point to potential adverse effects, such as an increase in LDL cholesterol and an increased risk of atrial fibrillation (Blumenthal et al., 2026). 

This does not mean all omega-3 products are ineffective or that prescription omega-3 therapies have no role. For some people, especially those with elevated triglycerides, specific prescription products may be recommended under medical supervision.

Also, these recommendations apply to specific patient populations and clinical outcomes.They do not address the wider population of generally healthy people who don’t regularly eat fish and are looking to improve their EPA and DHA intake.

For consumers choosing an over-the-counter omega-3 supplement, product quality, oxidation control, and accurate EPA/DHA labeling remain critical factors.*

Why do cardiologists say stop fish oil?

For many of the same reasons discussed in the guidelines above, some cardiologists recommend that patients stop taking nonprescription fish oil supplements. One concern is that many people are taking OTC fish oil without knowing the actual amount of EPA and DHA they are getting, whether the product has oxidized, or whether it has been tested for quality (Blumenthal et al., 2026; Hilleman et al., 2019).


Cardiologists may still recommend prescription omega-3 products for specific patients, such as those with elevated triglycerides and appropriate lipid profiles. However, they generally do not recommend routine fish oil supplementation as a cardiovascular prevention strategy for healthy people. Part of this comes down to the patients they typically see: cardiologists often work with people who already have cardiovascular risk factors or disease, rather than people simply looking to optimize their health through supplements.


This does not mean all nonprescription omega-3 products are ineffective or that everyone taking an OTC fish oil supplement for general health needs to stop. It means the reason for taking omega-3s matters. For consumers, product quality, formulation, freshness, and the amount of EPA and DHA provided all play in.*

*These findings apply to specific clinical contexts, primarily people with high triglycerides or existing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. They are not a recommendation for the general population to stop taking omega-3 supplements, and they don't apply to fish oil taken for general wellness rather than a diagnosed condition. If you currently take fish oil for a specific medical reason, don't stop or change your dose without talking to your doctor first, especially if you're on blood thinners, have a history of atrial fibrillation, are pregnant, or have a cardiovascular condition.
